In certain respects, Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli does not quite fit the eighteenth-century mould. For a neo-Corellian, he is unusually fond of complexity, both technical and compositional, and also unusually open to other contemporary influences, such as those of Handel and Vivaldi. But the quality of his music speaks for itself virtuosic and joyously melodic, these six chamber sonatas had a huge impact on Delphian producer Paul Baxter.

Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (6 July 1739 – 28 February 1796) was a German violinist, pianist and composer. His music, especially the compositions for keyboard, can be seen as the missing link between the ‘sentimental style’ of composers like Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the classical style of composers like Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. German born harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano player Jermaine Sprosse is a specialist in the ‘galant’ repertoire, particularly the music of the Bach sons and their circle.

It’s amazing to think that world première recordings of Bach are possible today at all. The harpsichordist Alexander Grychtolik has painstakingly reconstructed two homage cantatas from Bach’s Leipzig years. The first, Erwählte Pleissenstadt (BWV 216a), survives only in a draft libretto and a few fragments of notation rediscovered in 2003 among the posthumous papers of a Japanese pianist. The second, O angenehme Melodei (BWV 210a), survives only in a soprano part and a separate print of the libretto for the earliest of its three versions.

His impressive output had a major influence on the course of music history and still thrills listeners today with the incomparable quality of his compositions. One of his greatest sacred works is Vespro della Beata Vergine from 1610, yet there is another excellent work which has been overlooked until today: the Vespers for the Blessed Virgin from 1650.
