Sonny Rollins has an all-star backup band on this 1980 release: keyboardist George Duke, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Al Foster and on some selections percussionist Bill Summers. The music ranges from "The Very Thought of You" and a remake of "Strode Rode" to some more lightweight group originals. Decent music but nothing that memorable occurs.
Rollins began the '80s with a session that intercut some of his old philosophies with supposed modernists like Duke and Clarke, though both are called on to perform in neo-traditional roles. The result is a diffident rather than a genuinely contrary record: not bad, with a nice "The Very Thought Of You" and a sweet original called "Little Lu," but the perfunctory retread of the ancient Rollins classic "Strode Rode" shows up the lightweight cast and situation.
