Reissue with latest 2014 DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. Charlie Rouse? Wasn't he the one that played with Theloniious Monk ? Well, yes. And certainly there's an argument that his recordings with Monk are his best work - probably the combination of intriguing compositions with the opportunity to work them over and over to find something new and equally satisfying in the each time - but Rouse was also a leader in his own right. Take, for example, his work with Julius Watkins (french horn) in Les Jazz Modes, the "Takin' Care of Business" album (issued on CD by OJC) and as co-leader of Sphere (not the Monk-tribute band it seems to have gone down in history as being).

Rouse came out of the Hawkins-Rollins school of tenor-playing and his big tone is evident on the tracks from "Yeah!" Its a shame that Alfred Lion at Blue Note stuck him in the 'bossa nova' category because he is certainly a match for Turrentine or Mobley and given more opportunities to record could possibly have done great things.

Seldon Powell is one of the many enigams in jazz: a multi instrumentalist fluent on just about any reed instrument that came his way but who never quite got beyond being a session player. His resume reads far and wide, having played latin with Willie Rodriguez (Flatjacks) orga-soul-jazz with Johnny Hammond Smith (Open House) and free jazz with Albert Ayler (New Grass). There are, however, precious few under his own name. Fresh Sound have just reissued his early seesions for Roost unjder the title "Go First Class". Powell's sound was very much like Paul Quinichette (another lost voice of jazz), much lighter than Rouse's and a clear compliment to the other's harder edge.
