Non Est Deus - The Last Supper (2018)

Non Est Deus is a band from Germany (Bavaria) which released its debut on January the 11th, 2018, a full lenght album called The Last Supper. The band is unsigned/ independent. The band's name, ,,Non Est Deus'', is in latin and would translate ,,There Is No God''. The black humor of the album's cover, as well as the humorous titles, describing the stages of a meal: ,,Serve Me", ,,Preperation", ,,Starter", ,,Main Course", ,,Dessert", ,,Finnished" make this band stand out.

The album starts with ,,Serve Me", apparently a request from a hungry man who wants to be served. Does he want to be served the truth, does he want to be served divine love? A deeper look shows this is actually a request made from the divinity towards the man.

The rest of the songs are a constant sacrifice depicted in the form of a meal preparation, until everything is ,,finnished". I highly recommend reading the lyrics, they are pure poetry.

This album manages to be both tragic and comic at the same time, and in a good way. At the first sight, the album seems and feels like a turmoil full of confusion, oscillating between deep faith and deep doubt. Emotions such as desperation and joy seem experienced simultaneously or are rapidly cycled through.

After reading the lyrics and looking deeper, the whole album is an irony, describing a meal made from somebody who sacrifices himself in the name of religion.
