The literary and religious themes chosen by Pierné are characterized by their childlike innocence and medieval inspiration. "Les Enfants a Bethleem" recalls the mystery plays of the Middle Ages which were performed in front of churches; this work is subtitled "Mystere en deux parties!' The text, by Gabriel Rigond, who also wrote the text of"Saint-Francois d'Assise',' is not taken from the Scriptures, but is rather a traditional narration on the birth of Jesus and calls on popular imagery such as oxen, donkeys and the stable. This popular and medieval nature is also to be found in the musical texture. Pierné willingly uses medieval modes and picturesque effects. The passages with trills beginning the score after the oboe solo and recurring several times evoke coldness, the deserted and frozen coun-tryside, silence and solitude and the looming night. Likewise, when the children first see the procession of the Three Kings, a rhythmic figure is used to describe the imposing march of the procession laden with gifts, and an "oriental" scale underlines the origin of the procession. None of these elements should cause us to forget the richness of the orchestral palette of Pierné nor the clarity and virtuosity of his writing. The refinement ofthe orchestral texture of the Chant to the Star in the first part does indeed create a magical universe. This work reveals a little known aspect of Gabriel Pierné.
