Yukihiro Takahashi (高橋 幸宏 Takahashi Yukihiro) is a renowned Japanese musician, who is best known as the drummer and lead vocalist of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and as the former drummer of the Sadistic Mika Band.
Yukihiro Takahashi first came to prominence as the drummer of the Sadistic Mika Band, and became known to western audiences after this band (led by Kazuhiko Kato, formerly of The Folk Crusaders) toured and recorded in the United Kingdom. After the Sadistic Mika Band disbanded, some of the members (including Takahashi) formed another band called The Sadistics, who released several albums. Finally Takahashi recorded his first solo album Saravah in 1977. In 1978, Takahashi joined Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono to form the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
After the Yellow Magic Orchestra disbanded in the mid 80s, Takahashi went solo and released a large number of solo albums, primarily intended for the Japanese market. Takahashi has collaborated extensively with other musicians, including Bill Nelson, Iva Davies of Icehouse, Keiichi Suzuki of the Moonriders (often as a duo dubbed "The Beatniks", although Suzuki essentially functioned as a member of Takahashi's backing band during the Moonriders' brief hiatus) and in particular Steve Jansen. Takahashi has released a single Stay Close and an EP Pulse as a duo with Jansen.
Takahashi helped compose the soundtrack to the anime series Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water in 1989, including the song "Families". Takahashi participated in temporary reunions of both the Sadistic Mika Band (missing the lead vocalist Mika who was replaced by Kaela Kimura), and The Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). Both of these reunions included tours of Japan, and an album of new material.
In the early 2000s, Takahashi became a member of the duo Sketch Show, with Haruomi Hosono. Sketch Show has released two albums, one of which, Loophole, has been released in the UK. Both Takahashi and Hosono have recently reunited with Sakamoto as HASYMO - a combination of Human Audio Sponge and Yellow Magic Orchestra. This collaboration produced a new single "Rescue" in 2007 and a new album looks to be in the pipeline in the near future. Fans of Takahashi's style as a member of YMO won't be disappointed in this first post-YMO release, which features solid, clever songwriting, Takahashi's usual silvery, squooshy vocals, and sharp, programmed keyboards and beats. Technically a solo album, both Ryuichi Sakamoto and Harry Hosono lend a hand, as does stalwart YMO sessionman Kenji Omura, and the band's Western lyricists Peter Barakan and Chris Mosdell. More surprising are the appearances by Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay, lending guitar and sax to half the tracks. Stylistically, the album is a companion piece to YMO's Technodelic (from the same year), sharing much of the same sound and feel. "Drip Dry Eyes" could be a Roxy Music number, and not because of the guest stars, while "Extraordinary" and "Glass" are excellent techno-pop in its earliest incarnation. And the ending number "Something in the Air" is a beautiful up-tempo ballad like "Cue" from BGM. A satisfying album.Review by Ted Mills, Allmusic.com

One of the best Yukihiro Takahashi album during his Yellow Magic Orchestra period, it is certainly a varied one. Melody-wise most songs are strong and a few additional singers provide some welcome relief to Takahashi's "characteristic vocal style" (to put it politely), although he does sing with real passion throughout this album. The two short tracks are instrumentals with a Japanese feel, whereas the songs are clearly influenced by, or themselves influenced the early eighties British synthpop scene featuring the likes of the Human League etc.
The English-lyric songs are all co-written by Peter Barakan who also helped out YMO in this respect. As usual the other two YMO members help out their friend here, but they only make an appearance on the wonderful 'Flashback', for which Ryuichi Sakamoto also provides the music. Other highlights include 'Sayonara' which has Japanese lyrics, 'This Strange Obsession' (written and partly performed by Zaine Griff), the melancholic 'Disposable Love' about the effects of a relationship breaking up and the fun 'All You've Got To Do'.
'The Real You' continues the vocal style first heard on YMO's 1981 album ‘Technodelic’ with its multiple vocal layers sort of sliding over the accompaniment. The last track on the album is a cover of a George Harrison song from the surreal ‘Yellow Submarine’ soundtrack and anybody who knows the heavily psychedelic Beatles original will raise an eyebrow because here Takahashi manages to turn it into a nice upbeat pop-song, although some psychedelic elements like a Hammond organ sound and the well-known Beatles trick of inverted drum-sounds are retained.Review by Ivar de Vries

Takashi switched to Yen Records, a subsidiary of Alfa Japan, for this rather straight-ahead pop album. That being said, the lack of studio trickery or any need to hook up with Western rock stars (apart from usual suspect Bill Nelson) seems to focus Takahashi's attention on writing some hummable melodies, with several dips into the inkwells of Lennon, '60s girl groups, and the British Invasion to supply the inspiration (though not the sound, which is typically synth-driven new wave). Instrumental influences come by way of Barry White, sitar rock, and Northern soul. "Coincidence" leads off side two with its striking wall-of-sound production, its nods to "Strawberry Fields Forever," and the kind of sequenced propulsion that marks his best work in YMO; it stands out as the most successful track here.Review by Ted Mills, Allmusic.com
