Some ten years probably separates the composition of the Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae (c. 1768) from the Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo (c 1777–8). Because of the virtuoso role of the organ in each work the former has become known as the ''Great Organ Mass'' and the latter as the ''Little Organ Mass''. 'Great' and 'Little' reflect both the size of the orchestras and the scale of each work. Thus the earlier of the two Masses is on an altogether grander scale than the later one. It is scored for a four-part chorus, four soloists (SATB), strings, cors anglais, horns, bassoon and obbligato organ, and in this performance additional trumpet and trombone parts found in one of the work's sources, are included as well. Doubtfully authentic timpani parts are also present. It is an extrovert composition, above all in its many robust choruses, though not without its more intimate and reflective moments. One of these occurs in the ''Et incarnatus est'', beautifully sung by the tenor, Peter Jelosits whom I feel I still know better as a precociously talented treble soloist in the Teldec Bach cantata series. In that tessitura he is replaced here by another boy treble, Georg Nigl, whose crystal clear if momentarily insecure solo in the ''Et resurrexit'' is fresh in timbre and lively in spirit. The movement, however, is marred by sharp choral singing which results in an agonizing organ entry towards the close. Surely this could have been rectified; it certainly should have been. The bass, Anton Scharinger, sounds less comfortable in his solo passages but in the lovely Benedictus the four soloists blend well together. This is one of the movements where the organ comes into its own with runs and ornamental flourishes neatly played by Martin Haselbock. There is a hint of Haydn's symphonic style of the 1770s in this piece, recalling particularly, perhaps, the Minuet of Symphony No. 46 in B major.
The ''Little Organ Mass'', in contrast with the ''Great'' is scored for a small body of strings—violins in two parts and bass—with organ obbligato. Intonation between vocalists and instruments, particularly the organ, is much less of a problem here and the performance in general is a stronger one. As in the other, the treble Georg Nigl is excellent, offering a more secure account of the Benedictus, for example, than the Augsburg Cathedral chorister Reinhold Zott in the recent Kammler EMI/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi version of the same work (on CD only). As a coda to this performance of the ''Little Organ Mass'', by the way, Michael Haydn's expanded version of his elder brother's extremely concise setting of the Gloria is appended after a suitable pause.
To sum up: these performances in spite of shortcomings, are enjoyable. Variable intonation in the ''Great Organ Mass'' will bother listeners from time to time, as may the deterioration in choral ensemble towards the end of the work, but on balance I just prefer this version of the ''Little Organ Mass'' to that of the Augsburg Cathedral Boys' Choir under Kammler—the Vienna Boys' Choir achieve a greater radiance of sound and are, perhaps, more sympathetically balanced than the Augsburg choir. The Augsburg performance, on the other hand, has a greater intimacy, arrived at T suspect by the use of a smaller instrumental ensemble. I prefer both to the much older LP performance with the choir of St John's College, Cambridge under Guest (Argo), if only because of the presence of boy treble and alto soloists.–Nicholas Anderson
