Trio Parnassus adopts flowing tempos for the “Archduke” trio, which fits into the ensemble’s overall “classical” conception of the work, quite removed from the Beaux Arts Trio’s slower and lovingly elevated performance that holds your attention by its sheer beauty of execution. There’s beauty aplenty in Parnassus’ playing as well, particularly in the serene Andante cantabile, where each variation unfolds in warmly glowing tone colors. The faster movements project a wonderfully Beethovenian bravura while maintaining a sparkling lightness of texture that renders all contrapuntal lines in sharp detail. The first movement’s main theme sings sweetly, the scherzo dances with a gentle rhythmic snap, and the finale frolics along joyfully before the closing flourish, where the players show off their considerable skills.
Parnassus brings these same qualities to the brief Trio WoO 39 (from 1812, also in B-flat) while gracing the early WoO 38 (1791) and Hess 48 (1784) with all the attendant 18th-century style, vigor, and elegance. MDG’s recording, by placing the piano (which sounds wonderful throughout) slightly back in the acoustic, achieves a believable and wholly satisfying instrumental balance. Another excellent addition to Trio Parnassus’ ongoing Beethoven series.–Victor Carr Jr
