This seems to be a golden age for piano trios: such groups are springing up everywhere, like daffodils in the springtime. The Trio Parnassus are an experienced world-class ensemble who have garnered an extensive discography, and deservedly so.The present disc is hailed as the opening salvo in a complete recorded cycle of the Beethoven piano trios and I am much impressed. I look forward with interest to hearing how the Trio Parnassus deal interpretatively with the very different styles posed by the two tersely cryptic Op. 70 works the Geister and the Schubertian No. 2 in E flat and, of course, the huge, lyrically expansive Op. 97 Archduke.As for the vernal early-period compositions recorded here, they deliver a bracing, unaffected, energetically driving account of Op. 1 No. 1. Their approach is somewhat similar to that taken by Stern, Rose and Istomin but is even more akin to that of Heifetz, Piatigorsky and Lateiner (who favour a cooler, purer sonority and style). The G major Trio, with its expansive first-movement introduction and intriguing anticipations of the Archduke's dance-like finale likewise gets sprinting treatment. And the sublimely long- limbed slow movement, galloping Scherzo and equestrian Presto fourth movement (how it anticipates the last section of Rossini's Overture to William Tell!) are all shrewdly given their due. The recording is realistic and well balanced. In every way, then, a promising start to the cycle, and I recommend it highly.–Harris Goldsmith
