Ten Years After is the debut album by the English blues rock band Ten Years After. It features "Spoonful", a Howlin' Wolf song (written for him by Willie Dixon) that the British blues rock group Cream covered as well (on their albums Fresh Cream and Wheels of Fire). The album is also low on original material in comparison to the band's later works which were, in most cases, entirely composed of Alvin Lee's songs. It's one of the first blues rock albums released by the British artists.
I saw Ten Years After at the 1967 Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival and was very impressed, this was a British blues band who rocked hard but also had a jazzy sophistication, in fact I was so impressed that I ordered this their first LP before it was released without even hearing it. I was slightly disappointed with the record at the time because I thought that it didn't capture the excitement of the band's live performance and to be honest I never played the record much. Listening to it again nearly fifty years later it sounds a lot better than I remember, it sounds surprisingly good - I think that it must be that jazzy sophistication of Alvin Lee's guitar and Chick Churchill's Hammond, together with Leo Lyons and Ric Lee's agile rhythm section that has worn very well.
My original vinyl LP had only the first 9 tracks but the 2002 CD release added 6 additional tracks, including a live version of the crowd pleasing 100-miles-an-hour instrumental Woody Herman's "Woodchoppers Ball". We also have two blues standards, Howling' Wolf's "Spoonful" and Sonny Boy Williamson's slowly building "Help Me" (the band's finale at the time, often driving the crowd to venue wrecking?!?). I think that the record starts off really well and then runs out of steam a bit but it has surprisingly varied sounds, with the country-ish rock of "Losing the Dogs" and the lovely acoustic blues of "Don't Want You Woman". The additional tracks include the singles "Portable People" (more country influence) and "The Sounds" (psychedelic hokum) as well as "Rock Me Baby" clone "Rock Me Mama" and the long slow blues "Spider in my Web".
With these additional tracks this record is much better value than the original release and I am amazed how much better it sounds now than when I first heard it, I'd probably go with the subtle jazzy "I Cant Keep From Crying" as my favourite track.Review by G. E. Harrison
The Original album from 1967 consisted of 9 tracks only, partly due to the limited time from the vinyl era, 20 minutes per side at the most. Like many bands at that time Ten Years After were much more polific and recorded so much music, which was featured on non-album singles or shelved. In 2002 the album was re-released of CD with another 6 extra tracks, of which one came from the 1972 (post Decca) compilation Alvin Lee and Company. Strangly, because that album is available on (expanded) CD also. So far some history behind this, Now in 2015 a 2-CD set is released with again extra tracks. First the albums original 9 songs, in mono and stereo, the same 6 extra songs as in 2002, 2 of them (Portable People, The Sounds) also in mono resp. stereo, plus 3 songs recorded live in 1968 for the BBC. Beware that the Sounds is not that, this is the same single as before, firstly not fully, it ends much earlier abruptly, problably broadcasted but secondly certainly not recorded live (listen to the vocal parts for instance and the in the studio added sound effects). These tracks circulated already a long time on bootlegs. The others are spread out on the new 2015 expanded Undead and Stondehenge 2-CD's. To me the first album was always somewhat underrated, but this is not fair, the album is truely a great listen. Alvin Lee (sadly passad away in 2013) shines a singer/songwriter and guitarist extra ordinair, with Rick Lee on drums, Leo Lyons on bass and Chuck Churchhill on organ and piano a strong band wasaerected. The sound is crystal clear, the songs remarkable, to say the least. With classics like Help Me, Spoonful and I Can't Help From Crying, frequently a part of the live set, and several own compositions, this has stood the time with ease, almost 5 decades later on.
