The Best of R.E.M. is a greatest hits album by R.E.M. released in 1991, shortly after the success of the band's seventh studio album, Out of Time, released by Warner Bros. The Best of R.E.M., however, was released by the band's previous record label, I.R.S. Records, and only includes tracks from their first five albums while the group was with that label. As such, it covers their output from 1982 to 1987.
The Best of R.E.M. was only issued in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil, complete with liner notes from Remarks: The Story of R.E.M. by Tony Fletcher (a domestic American greatest hits album had been released prior with a very similar track list titled Eponymous). It has no alternate mixes (unlike Eponymous); all the songs are the album versions.
Three songs were taken from each of the first five studio albums and one song was taken from Chronic Town, the band's first EP, making a total of sixteen songs on the album.
"A considerable improvement on the useful but haphazard Eponymous collection," wrote Dan Maier in a 5/5 review for Select. "It'll be a few years before Warners release their own 'Best Of'. In the meantime, this'll do very nicely indeed."
Chances are you won't know most of the songs on this album, if, like me, you first heard of REM around the Green/Out of Time years. In fact, the only ones I'd heard of were The One I Love and It's The End Of The World As We Know It. If you're the same, don't let that put you off though as this album is full of incredibly beautiful songs that will introduce a whole new side to the band.
I wasn't too keen on this album at first, but soon the tunes started to grow on me, and now this CD rarely leaves my stereo. From the early mumblings of Radio Free Europe and Perfect Circle to the truely amazing Fall On Me and Cuyahoga, it's impossible not to fall in love with this collection.
It's a shame that recently the band have lost their way, so instead of buying Reveal or Around The World, invest in this and some of their earlier albums (especially Murmur) as you won't be disappointed.Review by M. Smith, Amazon.co.uk
This album is full of REM's lesser known songs. This doesn't mean that they're no good though. From the minute you turn on the ablum, the sound is amazing. Perfect Circle is one of the most beautiful and moving songs I've heard, with an absolutly gorgoues chorus. Talk About The Passion is one of those songs you can listen to, and just listen. (Don't go Back to) Rockville is a groovy summer song, and is really uplifting. Fall on Me is another beautiful track, as is Cuyahoga. The album ends in one of my favourite It's The End Of The World (And I Feel Fine) and is maybe a reminder to everyone out there in the world, who are always in danger.
