Mozart wrote his 17 Church Sonatas between 1772 and 1780, the period in which he was Konzertmeister to the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. Sometimes known as Epistle Sonatas, these short instrumental movements were designed to fill the gap between the readings of the Epistle and the Gospel at Mass, so clearly profundity was not something that was required of them. However, if an hour of sonata allegros seems to you like an indigestible prospect then the sheer charm of this music should quickly banish such unworthy thoughts. All under five minutes long, these are delightful pieces, not in the least bit 'churchy' and ranging in scale from chamber music for two violins and continuo (the majority) to symphony-style orchestral movements and a tiny concerto allegro for organ.
This last, together with three others in which there is a written-out organ part, has often led to these works being treated as organist's territory, but in most of the sonatas the organ rarely rises above a continuo role, and the real stars are therefore the solo violinists. On this recording they are Simon Standage and Micaela Comberti—the top half of the Salomon Quartet—and they play with the assurance that comes of good blending, precision ensemble and a thorough familiarity with the spirit of the music. There are occasional uncertainties of tempo (something which continuo organist/director Robert King might have prevented), but otherwise these are good, stylish performances. The nattily-titled Classical Orchestra of the King's Consort is called in to provide a suitably imposing sound for the 'orchestral' sonatas, and Ian Watson is the obbligato organist in the four sonatas that require one—though, as I say, there is only one where he can rightly be called a soloist, and here he is surprisingly reticent (surely he could have beefed up the registration for more than just the cadenza). On the whole, though, this is a disc which should bring only pleasure.
Of its rivals, London Baroque (Harmonia Mundi) are rougher-edged, though in many ways more imaginative and certainly more vigorous. Their disc does, however, omit the three orchestral sonatas. Peter Hurford and his ad hoc Dutch group on Decca (playing on modern instruments and adding a bassoon to the line-up) offer all 17, in a set of performances (and recordings) which are easily the most highly polished of the three, but which to me seem a trifle cool.–Lindsay Kemp
