The 17th century - especially in Italy - was obviously much more advanced in terms of women's emancipation than many a century later. At least we know of several female composers from this period who achieved fame and glory without having to hide behind a male pseudonym.
One of the most interesting and best-known is certainly the Venetian Barbara Strozzi, who published more works in the twenty years between 1644 and 1664 than almost all of her male colleagues of the time, with a total of nine extensive collections of secular and sacred vocal music.
Mona Spägele, who has long made a name for herself as an outstanding soprano in the field of early music, has now recorded a selection of arias, cantatas and lamenti with her Ensemble Incantato for cpo - the result is simply enchanting.
Strozzi always deliberately sought unconventional solutions when realizing the texts in her works, making her one of the most innovative composers in the field of vocal chamber music in the 17th century.
However, she surprises the modern listener even more with her highly refined sophistication in the sensitive realization of language and an intensity of expression that has lost hardly any of its immediacy to this day, especially when it is interpreted as it is here.
