Viennese church music of the generations before Haydn and Mozart is regrettably unfamiliar, and this attractive CD fills in something of the background and helps tell us where Haydn and Mozart were coming from. Antonio Caldara, Venetian by birth, spent several years in Rome, moved to Vienna in 1716 (he was in his mid-forties) as vice-Kapellmeister to Fux and (with regular trips to Salzburg to write operas) stayed 20 years, until his death. He wrote a large quantity of church music, including some 30 festal masses from his Viennese years, of which the main work here seems to me an excellent example. Caldara's rich textures and often very expressive and chromatic harmony, his fluent Italian melodic writing and his resourceful counterpoint, suffuse a work with many striking qualities.
The individual movements are often quite short, but each has its character: the 'Laudamus te' with its lyrical violins supporting a soprano-baritone duet, the 'Gratias' with its big blocks of choral sound and a fugal ending, the 'Domine Deus' with its trombone duetting with the alto - to take just one section of the Gloria. There are a lot of big choral fugues, in the Kyrie, to end the Gloria, the Credo (this one a double fugue) and the Agnus Dei. In the Credo, as in a number of those in Austrian masses (including one of Mozart's), some passages of the text are assigned to the soloists while the chorus interrupt with affirmations of 'Credo, credo'. The orchestra not only includes trombones but also two pairs of trumpets, which add grandeur and solemnity as needed, and also disport themselves in some of the solo movements. I found it highly enjoyable: this is a very capable performance, with a good, polished tenor, some refined singing from the alto and the bass, and a pleasantly cool soprano. Most of the singing is well in tune. The acoustic - the recording was made in an abbey church in Hanover - is lofty and spacious; the choir seems very able but a bit hazy.
<The other two pieces were written in Caldara's Roman days. The little motet Caro mea vere est cibus is an intimate miniature, for just two voices and continuo; the Gradual, in five brief movements, includes a delightful soprano aria with a florid violin part and an alto aria with obbligato cello, with a jolly final Alleluia. The instrumental items, by the Czech Frantisek Tuma, who worked in Vienna from the 1720s until his death in 1774, are Gradual Sonatas, which occupy precisely the same role, liturgically, as the Epistle Sonatas familiar from Mozart. Each begins with a rather sombre fugal movement, which is followed by a lively one. The slower fugues may lack a sense of direction, but in the second sonata here Tuma adds a pair of trombones to the strings; a little odd, perhaps, but it gives rise to a quicker movement - using baroque fugal cliches highly entertainingly - that is a real delight. Here is a record well worth trying.–Stanley Sadie
