Kenneth Gilbert is one of today's most outstanding harpsichordists. On this recording of works by J.S. Bach, he uses two different instruments by a modern maker based on period examples. The difference in the sound accentuates the contrasts between the two large-scale works and the more intimate pieces.
The well-known "Italianisches Konzert" is from the second part of his quasi-instructional 'Klavierübung.' Bach uses solo harpsichord in the concerto format, so the keyboard takes on both the solo and tutti voices. The result is an evocation of the orchestra and solo writing of a typical Baroque Italian concerto, hence the name. The four "Duettos," from book three of the 'Klavierübung,' were originally intended for organ. As there is no pedal on the harpsichord, this version is very close to the 'Two-part Inventions,' so it works nicely on this instrument. These are delicate, intimate pieces that deserve to be heard more often. Bach's "Overtüre nach franzöischer Art" also comes from the second part of his 'Klavierübung,' where it is known as the Partita in B minor. It is a suite of seven dance movements in the French style (or, rather, Bach's own twist on it), with an introductory prelude-like overture.
