This is Zemlinsky before Richard Strauss' rich chromaticism and nascent Expressionism inflamed his imagination. Yet there's nothing wanting in the language here. Within the compass of Brahms' models, Zemlinsky's orchestral mastery is comprehensive and his expression and imagination have widest range. His orchestral palette is flavorful and incandescent within the parameters of traditional orchestration. There are some lovely colors here.
Moreover, Zemlinsky's grasp of symphonic form is undeniable. He is astonishingly resourceful in now he multiplies and morphs the motivic cells that form the work's opening movement, a masterly essay in sonata form. Here, the development is especially satisfying as his themes modulate restlessly, unfolding and stretching forth to touch their long-range goals, forming a grand architecture.
Zemlinsky's melodies are winsome and stick gratefully to the ear. There are passing moments of great consonance and beauty in this work, and an emotional range that is by turns noble, gentle and heroic. This is a symphony untroubled by doubts, neuroses or existential uncertainties. It reflects a Zemlinsky confident and as yet undefeated.
Having proven himself a master of traditional symphonic form, Zemlinsky would eventually move on, finding the Straussian tone poem more amenable to his inner expressive needs. He is a transitional figure from the world of Brahms to that of Mahler and beyond, but thank goodness he still had one foot in the world of Brahms, Bruckner and Dvorak, and decided to plant it.
Conlon's direction here is sane, soulful and objective without being the least bit dry. Like Odysseus tied to the mast, he resists the temptations of rubato and exaggeration, and gives a clear, modern account of the piece that nevertheless resonates with one's romantic yearnings. I can imagine a performance that gives more swagger to the Dvorakian hemiolas of the scherzo (whose syncopations evoke both the Dvorak and Mahler's sevenths), but we'll leave that to a future interpreter. Getting an undistorted and sufficiently realized impression of this lost masterpiece was his primary consideration and he succeeded beautifully.
The Cologne forces are disciplined, well-balanced and make a lovely sound, particularly in the lower strings, which are captured in all their wine-dark mellowness by the EMI sound, which is life-like and true to the hall. This wonderful masterpiece has been haunting my days for quite some time. Let it into your life, too, and be forever enriched.
