A beautifully lyrical, mellow and atmospheric performance, recorded with outstanding clarity and fiedlity and clearly benefiting from having been recorded ''live''. Inbal's interpretation comes close to Solti's in its happy blending of the symphony's poetry and drama. Of course, the Chicago Symphony's playing for Solti (Decca), and for Abbado's rather more impersonal approach (DG), is in a class of its own, as is the Decca recording, but the Frankfurt strings have a lovely sheen and the woodwind and brass are superb—many Mahlerians may prefer, as I do, the sound of this fine orchestra in this music to the spotlit brilliance of Muti's Philadelphia (EMI) and the sometimes insensitive though highly-dramatic New Yorkers under Mehta (CBS).
Inbal observes the repeat of the first movement exposition, by the way. His particular triumph is his structural grasp of the symphony. One has known many performances when the finale, for all its splendours, seems to hang together loosely, but there is no suggestion of that here—it sweeps along with a compelling sense of inevitability and the gorgeous second subject, most tenderly phrased, occurs as a logical contrast. Freshness and vitality are the keynotes throughout. A major advantage of this CD over its rivals is that 22 indexed entry-points are provided whereas the others have only four (three in Mehta's). since records are an aid to study as much as anything, not to provide plentiful access seems to me a waste of one of the principal conveniences of the CD format. Full Marks to Denon.
