Composer Christoph Strauss (c.1580-1631) has nothing going for him. His name will make potential listeners think that here comes yet another member of the overstretched family of composers of sound-alike waltzes. An omniscient internet encyclopaedia labels him "old-fashioned". For the last 20 years of his life he was at loggerheads with Austrian Emperor Ferdinand II, and he died without seeing the publication of his most important works. This CD, rightly praised by other reviewers, features one of these, framed by motets from an earlier, less fraught period of his life, when he was favoured by the enlightened emperor Matthias.
The motets have the polyphonic and declamatory character of the works of a previous generation, i.e. without continuo. However, one is struck by the studied integration of voices with instruments, here cornetti and sackbutts. This is no random beefing up of weaker vocal parts, but something which the composer's instructions show to be integral to performance of his works. The instruments make the antiphonal effects of the motets particularly striking.
However, it is the mass that shows Strauss to be a potential genius. It begins on an altogether higher plain of expressiveness, with a spot of theorbo/organ on the bass line. His mastery of the sackbutts, in particular, reminds one of the transformation of Schubert's orchestral music through the unprecedented inclusion of trombones in the Unfinished symphony. Then something extraordinary happens about half way through. Words fail me to describe it effectively, but I have never heard anything like it. The sackbutts are basic to it, but the cornetti also play their part. You have to hear it.–A. Cooper
