Gottlieb Muffat ( 1690-1770) came from a large family of nine children which was not unusual for the time when infantile mortality rate was high. His father Georg Muffat was a composer himself and a Kappellmeister who also served as an organist at the court of the Bishop of Passau. Four of his children were to become musicians including our composer Gottlieb who settled down in Vienna after his father's death.
He managed to obtain a sholarship to study with Johann Joseph Fux, the famous composer and theoretician who took him under his wing and taught him everything he needed to know about composition. Six years later, he went on to become the organist of court chapel. He remained at the imperial court until his death, working as a music tutor for the children of the imperial family and first court organist.
Muffat' s music output consists mainly of keyboard works. During his lifetime two sets of his works were published, one being a volume of organ music for church services (1726) and the suites for harpsichord, Componimenti Musicali per il cembalo ( circa 1739 ) dedicated to the emperor Charles 6th. These harpsichord suites were highly praised by the 19th century scholar, Friedrich Chrysander who described them as" one of the very best harpsichord works of the age surpassed in its fullness of well- formed, rich and original melodies by no other work of the time" except Händel's and Bach's. He went on saying : "Of all the Germans, it was he who took Couperin as his closest model " whom he exceeded. In these works, "we see the first ripe fruit of the new spirit if the Vienna school." And he concludes" thus, the Componimenti have obtained a great historical importance".
These perceptive comments help us to understand the very nature of these harpsichord suites. The Componimenti Musicali observe the conventional features of the suite of the time by keeping the unity of tonality and observing the traditional sequence of the four dances, allemande,courante,sarabande, followed by optional dances before the final gigues. So, looking at these pieces superficially one might think of these pieces as beautifully crafted in the traditional manner except that the composer spices things up by introducing elements of the new galant cantabile style, by expanding movements when you would expect them to end. Such a personal touch already points to an early sonata form.
