Im Gegensatz zum berühmten späteren Amtsnachfolger J. S. Bach konnte Thomaskantor Sebastian Knüpfer vom politischen Arm ungehindert seinen musikalischen Fähigkeiten freien Lauf lassen. Das Ergebnis sind prächtige Psalm- und Choralkonzerte für den feierlichen Gottesdienst an der Thomaskirche.
Aus Knüpfers geistlichem Oeuvre hat der Zinkenist und Musikwissenschaftler Arno Paduch acht der bedeutensten Werke ausgewählt und diese mit seinem Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble eingespielt.
Sie sind mit vier bis sechs Singstimmen, Streichern, Bläser und Continuo-Gruppe groß besetzt und geben (fast ausschließlich in Ersteinspielungen) ein eindrückliches Zeugnis ab vom hohen musikalischen Standard, der auch schon vor Johann Sebastian Bach an der Thomaskirche geherrscht hat.
