Listeners used to the Hanover Band will need no prompting to buy this excellent series of performances, excellently recorded. They avoid some of the more quirky and, to some, off-putting aspects of period performance. There are no ugly bulges of tone and wirey shafts of under-nourished violin tone. The wind and brass play bang in tune and the instruments are fully under the control of these top players.
What characterises these performances? Musicality and chamber-like concentration based on close listening to one another are at the heart of these readings. No one is out to claim a starring role, these are very much ensemble performances. Speeds are carefully chosen, so that we avoid the "speed-at-all-costs" approach, but what we have here are lively, sprung rhythms and forward momentum. Phrasing is loving and attentive, so that the natural and musical inflection of what Bach wrote is allowed to take its proper place.
All these players are excellent, one has no fears about tuning or articulation issues compromising the pleasure of listening. Sonically, these are fine recordings, clear, analytical, yet very warm, everything one wants, really.
Anthony Halstead directs from the harpsichord, or the horn in the first concerto. His vision of these great works draws all the elements together in performances which will be hard to better in any respect.–Geoffrey Bellamy
