The compositions for violin and piano recorded here were written between 1945 and 1960. Although Kurt Albrecht, Mátyás Seiber and Joachim Schweppe never met and their biographies took very different turns, they ultimately appear connected through their contemporaries. National Socialism and the Second World War left their mark on the lives of all three composers.

Seiber's successful work in Germany was brought to an abrupt end by those in power in 1933, and he himself was forced into exile. Kurt Albrecht, who came to terms with the new situation, lost his apartment in a bomb attack towards the end of the war, and the manuscripts of numerous unprinted works were destroyed.

One generation younger, Joachim Schweppe was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a youth and returned from the war wounded. After the end of the war, each of the three composers had to find their way in a time of upheaval and upheaval, but also of the formation of ideological camps in politics and art. All three works, as is already clear from their genre designation as suite or sonata, seek a connection to traditions of the past, but each of them shows a striving for a personal statement in a modern idiom. Each of the composers, in his own way, answers the questions of a difficult time.
