Francis Lockwood & Johan Renard - New Surya (2024) [Official Digital Download 24/48]

This project is the result of a meeting with the violinist Johan Renard during concerts organized in tribute to my brother Didier Lockwood, but also a nod to the group Surya set up in 1979 by my late brother and the drummer Jean My Truong where in the group successively at the time were bassists Josquin Turenne Des Prés, Bunny Brunel and Sylvin Marc. I played keyboards there with Luc Pluton and of course Didier Lockwood on violin and Jean My Truong on drums. From there came the idea of forming this quartet because Johan Renard is in line with the energy that Didier could give to music. It happened naturally! It was almost chance that set up this project, as if it were obvious! But as they say ''chance does not exist''… In the company of Frédéric Sicart on drums, William Brunard on double bass and Henri Dorina for the electric bass parts, we wanted to explore the new paths of so-called 'Jazz' music while remaining in acoustic instruments but giving a more current impulse. It is also a certain way of continuing in all modesty the legacy left by my brother Didier because Johan has well integrated his teaching and spirit. Of course the goal here is not to reproduce the sound of the Surya group but rather to let its musical energy shine through in the hope of having succeeded. A great adventure in short.
