Judy Wexler imbues every song she touches with a sense of realism, wonder and depth that's ever so rare. Disc 1 features tracks from studio sessions in '78 and '80 with backing from Hubert Laws, Grover Washington JR, Feddie Hubbard and more. Disc 2 features previously unreleased live performances from Europe '80, '82 and '89. In a prolific recording career that spanned five decades, Carmen McRae received a national endowment for the arts jazz fellowship award for lifetime achievement and is considered a peer of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was regarded as one of the greatest theoretical and practical musicians of his time even during his lifetime; arguably the most famous son of Johann Sebastian Bach, he broke new ground in the concerto genre between the Baroque and Classical periods. His flute concerti are not only technically exceptionally demanding but are particularly challenging “in the art of expression”, to quote one of his contemporaries. In this new recording of C.P.E. Bach’s flute concertos in A minor (Wq 166 / H. 431), G major (Wq 169 / H. 445) and D minor (Wq 22 / H. 425) the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt and Ariel Zuckermann (solo flute and conductor) invoke the zärtliche Empfindungen, the tender sentiments that the composer considered essential in order to reveal new aspects of music.

Fresh from his triumphant onstage success in Paris, Berlin and Brussels singing leading roles in the operas of Rameau and Mozart, tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen presents his long-awaited first Mozart recording. Together with his ensemble A Nocte Temporis, he has devised a highly imaginative programme.

The trio of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie Fowlis, and Karine Polwart first came together as a writing experiment coming out of the pandemic lockdown. With touring off the calendar, multi-Award winning US singer-songwriter Carpenter was looking for something new and reached out to Fowlis and Polwart, two highly acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriters whose work she had long admired.

The recording includes art songs, duets, works for piano, piano and violin as well as spoken texts, all connected to one of France’s most famous authors of the 19th century, George Sand. Featured on the CD alongside Sonya Yoncheva are pianist Olga Zado, mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti and violinist Adam Taubitz. Sonya Yoncheva can be heard not only singing, but also reciting letters from and to George Sand as well as a poem by the renowned author.

Jazz vocalist Helen Humes’ second album on Contemporary Records, “Songs I Like to Sing!” was released in 1961 and is conducted by Marty Paich. Backed by musicians including Art Pepper (sax), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Shelly Manne (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar) and Andre Previn (piano).

From the deep woods now emerges Birna, Wardruna’s sixth studio album. Through his never resting dialogue with nature, main composer Einar Selvik has been searching for the voice of the bear. Birna – the she-bear in Old Norse – is a work of art dedicated to the warden of the forest, nature’s caretaker, and her battles here on earth. Slowly driven out of her habitat by modern day societies, she has entered a stage of permanent hibernation. As a result, the forest is gradually dying, longing for its pulse and heart – its shepherd. Birna calls for her return.

Niemandsland (trans: "No man's land") is not just the title of this album. Matthias Meyer also named his band as such. The term clearly has a deeper meaning for the drummer, composer, and bandleader from Berlin. It has become a key word for his musical self-discovery.

This programme brings together composers who, for the most part, were compelled to flee their homeland. In 1920, Ivan Wyschnegradsky took refuge in Paris, where he wrote for a quarter-tone piano at a time when, in Russia, the slightest dissonance was considered a political provocation.
