Possessor of a distinctive tone and a fluid bop-oriented style, Charlie Rouse was in Thelonious Monk’s Quartet for over a decade (1959-1970) and, although somewhat taken for granted, was an important ingredient in Monk’s music.

THE BABY HUEY STORY: THE LIVING LEGEND is an audiophile necessity. Recorded in 1970, it is the only solo album by James "Baby Huey" Ramey. After his untimely death at the age of 26, Curtis Mayfield finished the production of the record and released it via his Curtom Records label in 1971. Her last album, which was also her final entry released via Dr. Luke’s imprint, found the party girl toning everything down and trying out folk, gospel, country and acoustic elements. But Period is a whiplash back to Kesha 1.0. "You want kids/ Well, I am mother," she sings on "JOYRIDE.," reminding us all that she is the original brat, years before Charli XCX (who paid homage by featuring Kesha on her "Spring breakers" remix). But their connection, at least as it manifests here, is more spiritual than sonic.

Indie-rock icon Jonathan Richman will release his 18th solo studio album, Only Frozen Sky Anyway, on July 4. The 12-track collection, which is being issued by the Blue Arrow Records label, will initially be available only digitally. CD and vinyl editions of the album will be released at a later date.
