A sharp departure from the black traditional gospel and soul-infused message music of Gospel Truth’s catalog, the Commanders’ 1972 release “Walk With Me” promises a very different type of “Old-Time Religion.” This quintet of white voices raised their joyful noise from the rolling hills of Birmingham, Alabama, a state mired by the imagery of fire hoses, police attack dogs and race-related unrest, as the wounds of the Civil Rights Era only recently began the process of healing.

Bachar wanted to record this fifth record, On/Off in his native Lebanon. More precisely in the main room of his family house, a stone house standing alone in the mountains north of Beirut. In the house, electricity goes on & off twice, a day. During the night, hostile and freezing, hyenas are heard; during the day, the birds whistle with serenity, and the light of day shines through the windows, each day slightly differently… This constant duality becomes a source of inspiration for Bachar, obsessed as he is by this rustic environment which exacerbates the senses.

Richard Danielpour has collaborated frequently with soprano Hila Plitmann, and this album features three recent works, two of which were written specifically for her. The song cycles heard here are sung in three languages central to the composer’s life. Songs of Love and Loss is in Farsi and sets the poetry of Rumi; Canti della natura, in Italian, takes sonnets attributed to Vivaldi in The Four Seasons; while Songs of My Father is set to the English poems of Danielpour’s father. Each cycle features differing instrumentation and reflects Danielpour’s long-admired compositional subtlety and refinement.

The process behind concept record “Songs Our Father Used to Sing” included a great deal of fanfare. On its face, the album is based on a humble enough premise: siblings Charles May and Annette May Thomas pay a loving tribute to their father, legendary gospel singer Brother Joe May, known affectionately in the gospel world as the “Thunderbolt of the Middle West.” But the album, ambitious in its sound, indulges even further into the grandiose in almost every aspect of its creation.
