Add mushies to grime and you get the spangled delicacies of Adventures in the Otherworld, the first project floated on Living Ornaments - a label run by Dizzee’s old right hand bredda, Cage.

Imagine Jon Hassell scoring a Ballard short set in a sunken South East London and you’re not far off this sick matrix of modular synths and psychoacoustic diffusion, riddled by Catford narrator Lucky I’m Luke. Written and recorded over 3 months in 2024 at Belly of the Beast studios - incubator of myriad chart hits - it brings together an unusual sonic fictional style more in key with Hyperdub’s Flatlines suppositions than anything explicitly grime, but nevertheless operates at its meridian, perhaps akin Mark Leckey’s psychic penetration of The Wirral’s infrastructures, or Dusk & Blackdown’s “keysite” nodes encompassing grime and dubstep’s stomping grounds.

The dense vertical listening soundscapes of Jon Hassell that fed forward into David Toop’s reading of rap’s origins also come to mind in the procession from efflorescent concrete sprawl in ’THe GReY aRea’, thru Lucky I’m Luke’s etheric, entheogenic narration on the goopy pulse of ’SeDaTeD’. Gamelan and strings loosely evoke Jammer’s sino-grime via Marina Rosenfeld dubscaping in the 11’ expansive oneiric projection ’THe CoLLaPSe’, and curdles into eyrie hyperjazz on ‘CRiTTeRS’, ultimately opening out with a wide-eyed instrumental lustre that lends a surreal new perspective on well known scapes in ‘MaRaNaSaTi’.

Tripped out, and v good.
