The film is the story of Marian Martin, a factory worker who rises to the top as the mistress of a wealthy attorney.

Spino, a 50-year-old pathologist, works at the city morgue. One night, he receives the unidentified body of a murdered young man to perform the autopsy. But Spino seems to recognize the body… himself, 30 years younger. He decides to start his own investigation leading him to a labyrinth of dead-ends.

Seven floors, seven identically built apartments yet completely different worlds. Seven situations, seven different stories that are nevertheless tied together by thousand strings. A 40 years old man, Alfonso, finally succeeds to marry a virgin, educate, beautiful and very catholic woman. But soon she, Regina, starts stressing him because she wants to be pregnant. When the stress is at its peak Regina at last gets pregnant. Once the goal is reached the man is put aside and dies.

A couple of farmers have been displaced from their land, a jungle area, isolated from the world, where lived his childhood and youth, and was brutally thrown to face the streets of an unfamiliar city, huge and ruthless.

The film is the immediate continuation of Un éléphant ça trompe énormément, released the previous year. Having fortuitously discovered a photograph in which Marthe embraces someone unknown, clothed with a chequed jacket, Étienne Dorsay becomes jealous, and imagines various stratagems to identify the lover. In the meantime, Étienne and his friends acquire a weekend house for a very low price. As in the previous work, the film is largely narrated by the character Étienne, whose tone shifts with the reality of the images.
