When American newspaperman and adventurer Henry M. Stanley comes back from the western Indian wars, his editor James Gordon Bennett sends him to Africa to find Dr. David Livingstone, the missing Scottish missionary. Stanley finds Livingstone ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume.") blissfully doling out medicine and religion to the happy natives. His story is at first disbelieved. When Livingstone later dies, Stanley returns to continue the good doctor's work (which, of course, never really happened).

Based on autobiographical stories by Ota Pavel, this lavish and colorful 1986 Czech film by Karel Kachyna follows a Jewish family on the eve of World War II. The ever-optimistic father, a fast-talking “country bumpkin,” appliance salesman, and sometime philanderer, charms society ladies with sales pitches that border on performance art, but the film turns somber as the Nazis arrive. Popper's optimism proves tragic when he refuses a transfer to Brazil; in one scene he cuts a hole in the ice over a pond, and the carp floating like ghosts in the water are an effective metaphor for the family's sudden poverty.

Maj. Pete Sandidge is a very able pilot who seems to have a streak of luck as far as flying goes. World War II is raging and Pete has come out of it pretty so far. He even has a beautiful girlfriend Dorinda Durston, herself a qualified pilot who ferries aircraft to different bases. When Pete is killed however, he finds himself in heaven and learns that every pilot has a guardian angel. He returns to Earth where, unseen by anyone, he coaches a pilot-in-training Ted Randall. Ted is a pretty good kid and is coming along nicely but when he's shipped to New Guinea he runs into Dorinda who has remained faithful to her lost love. As Ted pursues her, Pete will have to decide what he wants to do about it.
