Very cool 70s work from Ray Conniff – two albums that have him taking on a very new groove! Theme From S.W.A.T. features a whole host of hip TV themes from the time – performed by Conniff's studio ensemble with a strong focus on instrumental solos – both by Ray on trombone, and Ethmer Rothen on flute – plus an unnamed keyboardist who does a pretty nice job! The Conniff Singers come in for a bit, but don't dominate entirely as they do on some of Ray's other 70s records – and there's even a few moments that get a bit funky – at least as funky as you'd expect from the man himself. Titles include "Mystery Movie Theme", "Police Story", "Baretta's Theme", "Welcome Back", "SWAT", and "Love Is All Around". Send In The Clowns is a nice mix of modes from Ray Conniff – as the record has him trying on a whole bunch of different styles – TV themes, soulful pop, and moodier mellow numbers – including one that even features some guest piano from Pete Jolly! The album's a bit more mixed in vibe than other Ray Conniff 70s records, but that also makes for some nice surprises – on titles that include "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Memories Are Made Of This", "Lonely Night", "Vera's Theme", "Love's Theme", and "Send In The Clowns".
