Australia’s acclaimed guitar quartet Guitar Trek has delighted audiences around the world for over 30 years. Pioneered by Timothy Kain in 1987, Guitar Trek reinvented the guitar quartet medium through its unique combination of its different-sized guitars. Critics and audiences the world over have warmed to the freshness and energy of their music-making.

For their new album, On Song, they have turned to the world of popular music. Inspired by Borje Sandquist’s solo guitar arrangement of the Lennon-McCartney favourite Across the Universe (‘so imaginative it was more like a new original work,’ says Kain), Guitar Trek invited seven composers – three Australians and one each from Brazil, Russia, the UK and the USA – to create new classical guitar pieces inspired by pop songs. ‘The world of popular song has accompanied us and enhanced all our lives since we were in the cradle,’ says Timothy Kain. ‘As the source of so much popular music and also as a respected classical instrument, the guitar sits at the meeting point of these two worlds.’

From Joni Mitchell to Lady Gaga, Scott Joplin to Nirvana, the results are irresistible: brilliant re-imaginings of beloved songs for the harmonic and textural riches of the guitar quartet.

The album finishes with a bonus track, Cuban Landscape with Sones, written especially for Guitar Trek by the great Cuban composer Leo Brouwer.
