Blues steeped and warmed in other Roots fringed outlets, the New Brunswick-born musician leads the listener through a cavalcade of emotions here.
On this record, Andersen foregoes his usual wild and woolly, head-on style brand of Roots Blues for a withdrawn, sensitive, toned down, often acoustic presentation.
It’s the flip side of Andersen.
On The Hammer & The Rose he draws favourable comparisons to Blues veteran, Eric Bibb, as it’s sensitive, unhurried and warm as Andersen shares an abundance of riches due to him cutting back on the background instrument side.

Producer and percussionist Joshua Van Tassel came up with the idea of making an album focussing on the quieter moments in his set, with this in mind Andersen set about writing songs to suit.
