Each new album of the Huelgas Ensemble directed by Paul van Nevel is expected as a rare and precious delicacy thanks to extremely neat performances, in an almost perfect choral intonation. The discovery of a repertoire often unpublished is also the source of a happiness as intellectual as moving. Paul van Nevel continues to surprise us with this mass of the dead in five parts, composed by Simone De Bonefont, quite delectable.
History has retained very little information about Simone De Bonefont (or Simon de Bonnefond) who was canon and Cantor of the Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand (historical capital of Auvergne and today Chief town of the Puy-de-Dôme Department in France). Only this Missa pro mortuis (Paris, 1556) was published together with an anthology of four-part songs.
The astonishing richness of the Polyphonic writing and the extraordinary mastery of the counterpoint of this Requiem seem to encompass all the characteristics of the franco-Flemish techniques of the time and represent one of the strong points of the Polyphonic vocal style of the Renaissance. The power of this interpretation captured in concert offers us a moment of luminous tranquility. This admirable performance is complemented by four compositions by franco-Flemish composers that the discreet maître de chapelle auvergnat may have known.
