Hailed by Consequence of Sound for her "atmospheric vocal delivery…jazzy indie rock arrangements…(and) experimental, avant-garde textures," Alice Phoebe Lou truly touches celestial heights with her frankly astonishing new album, PAPER CASTLES. The South Africa-based artist’s second full length recording is a breathtaking song cycle of romance and struggle, solitude and adventure, told through a free-spirited blend of electronic soul and psychedelic folk that highlight her honeyed vocals whilst revealing a limitless approach to musicality and craft.

Born in Cologne in 1847, Agnes Zimmermann settled in London and was soon celebrated as a fine pianist, teacher, music editor and composer.

The Chiaroscuro Quartet made their first appearance on BIS with acclaimed recordings of Joseph Haydn’s Sun Quartets, Op. 20, described in The Strad as ‘period-instrument performances of the utmost subtlety and refinement’. The Op. 20 quartets are widely regarded as a milestone in the history of the genre.

Chopin turned the Scherzo into a new form of piano composition: an independent virtuoso work which he laced with drama, Polish folk song, tranquillity and nuance. With their rhythmic lilt and filigree ornamentation the Impromptus are infused with Romantic freedom, while the Allegro de concert, Op. 46 was originally conceived as a movement for a projected piano concerto but was instead revised for solo piano.

Valery Gavrilin was one of the most colourful and significant Russian composers of the second half of the 20th century. He was only 25 when he composed The Russian Notebook, a ‘poem of love and death’ crafted in a new musical language that doesn’t employ folk melodies but does use folkloric texts, and with a virtuosic vocal part. These stylised tunes are combined with rich melodies to form a haunting cycle heard here in a 2018 orchestration. The ten numbers from the ballet Anyuta are lively, melodious and touchingly beautiful.

The new GENUIN CD offers fascinating acoustic experiments with compositions based on the tonal system of the Bohlen-Pierce scale. This system uses a twelfth instead of an octave and is divided into thirteen tonal steps, taking the listener into magical-archaic tonal worlds that transcend all listening habits.

Premiered in New York City in 1987, the piece has been rarely recorded The young Swiss violinist, David Nebel (1996), recorded Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, and Glass’s Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra - both conducted by Kristjan Järvi

After an acclaimed first installment, Inon Barnatan, Alan Gilbert and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields complete their Beethoven piano concertos diptych. This recording project bears the fruit of longstanding and profound musical friendships.
