Founded by Hazy Osterwald in 1949, the band had their first performance at the International Jazzfestival in Paris. The founding members were Sunny Lang (bass), John Ward (drums), Pierre Cavalli (guitar), Ernst Höllerhagen (clarinet) and Francis Burger (piano). Later, other members like Curt Prina (piano), Dennis Armitage (saxophone) and Peter Beil (trumpet) joined the band.

"Beat" contains eight of Snorre’s own tracks, as well as an anomaly in the form of a piece by bassist Juan Tizol (of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra) - the seldom heard and even more rarely performed piece, Zanzibar. “It’s certainly not a coincidence that the number is included,” Snorre explains. “I’ve been working on some of jazz’s more exotic pieces, so crossing paths with Tizol was inevitable. His ‘Caravan’ from 1936 created a school in itself, and his ability as one of the first to create music inspired by, for example – Latin music – is unparalleled.” Zanzibar had fallen by the wayside for incomprehensible reasons, but is, like Snorre’s own music, pure joy. Glowing with colorful ele- ments, Zanzibar is a gem of a composition, and Snorre has felt a responsibility to keep it alive, while also using it as inspiration.

The band's only hit single, "Hello, Hello", became the first hit title to emerge from the San Francisco rock scene. Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-lived bands, staying together for over six decades. During much of that time, the band was only successful in the U.K., where it racked up a string of Top Ten singles across the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (a Top Ten hit in the U.K.). Following that single, the band suffered a lean period for the next few years, before the bandmembers decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970 with their Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon album. The Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned in Britain. If anything, their very predictability has ensured the group a large following.
