Model Tests and Numerical Simulations of Liquefaction and Lateral Spreading II: LEAP-ASIA-2019 by Tetsuo Tobita, Koji Ichii, Kyohei Ueda
English | EPUB (True) | 2024 | Pages | ISBN : 3031488202 | 135.5 MB

This book presents work collected through the Liquefaction Experiments and Analysis Projects (LEAP) in 2019 (LEAP-ASIA-2019) following the LEAP-UCD-2017 whose results have been published as a first volume. In addition to the research targets set in the previous one, such as the repeatability, variability, and sensitivity of lateral spreading on mildly sloping liquefiable sand, this volume includes research efforts to validate the generalized scaling law (hereafter “GSL”) for the identical prototype with the one employed in UCD-2017. In LEAP-ASIA-2019, 10 institutes around the world conducted 23 tests in total. It was the first multi-institutional attempts to investigate the validity of the generalized scaling law for the saturated sandy sloping deposit with wide range of initial conditions. The experimental data provided a unique basis for assessing the capabilities of six different simulation platforms for numerical simulation of soil liquefaction. The results of the experiments and the numerical simulations are presented and discussed in papers submitted by the project participants.

Forms of Inequality and the Legitimacy of Governance, Volume Two by Italo Pardo, Giuliana B. Prato
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 242 Pages | ISBN : 3031786939 | 6 MB

This edited volume uses ethnographic cases to examine social, political, and economic inequality in diverse urban settings. This book is couched in the idea that ethnographically-based analysis helps to bring out the nature and interconnections between different forms of inequality and sheds light on the major forces that combine to create inequalities. Ethnography also helps to identify the dynamics that undergird the principle of freedom of thought and of action — a key principle, that is, of associated life in a democracy — and recognize empirically that these dynamics not only protects difference but increase it, for they underpin the freedom of the individual to use their talents to manage their lives and achieve their goals. This second volume in a two-part series focuses on housing and residential patterns, development and urban regeneration, and education. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in sociocultural anthropology, sociology, politics, socio-legal studies, urban change, education.

Urban Development with Treated Recycled and Reuse of Wastewater: Sustainable Management by Biman Gati Gupta
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 153 Pages | ISBN : 9819608562 | 17.3 MB

This book reviews all important aspects of wastewater treatment with the aim of shedding new light on these effects through a combined understanding of traditional and new paradigms. The book is divided into five sections, the first of which reinterprets wastewater types from the point of generation, examining the characteristics and different physicochemical properties of wastewater. The second section discusses recent advances in understanding process water from surface water to groundwater. A wide range of issues in an affected area polluted by heavy chemicals and metals used in different processes lead to different results, and the book then looks at the effects in different types of water, agricultural land, fruit and vegetables in the affected area. Public health in the area of interest is also greatly affected and the details are included here in this book. The final section gives us an overview of the process and ultimately inspires many to develop better technology of energy saving plants to minimise the damage of waste treatment and restore our ecosystem and health issues. This book will be of interest to all researchers in life sciences, biology, ecology, environmental engineering and many more, especially for sustainable urban development.

Social Theorists of Morality: Essays on Moral Agency

Social Theorists of Morality: Essays on Moral Agency by Owen Abbott
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 360 Pages | ISBN : 3031751809 | 9.4 MB

This book provides an interdisciplinary series of essays on key social theorists of morality. It explores contributions to social moral theorising made by W. E. B. Du Bois, G. H. Mead, Jane Addams, Alasdair MacIntyre, Carol Gilligan, Seyla Benhabib, Kwame Anthony Appiah, and Jonathan Haidt. It thus seeks to integrate alternative voices at the “foundations” of sociological theorising about morality, while entering into dialogues with post-Enlightenment moral philosophy and contemporary moral psychology. In so doing, it engages with perspectives of pragmatism, virtue ethics, care ethics, feminist critiques, and moral foundations theory. The essays discuss key topics in social theories of morality, including moral action, socialisation, habit and reflexiveness, relationships, emotion, self, identity, racism and colonialism, universalism, and innateness. It centres crucial (but often overlooked) questions of moral power, and assesses the relationship between moral theorising and normative argument. The essays are conjoined by a running theme of moral agency—how it is constituted and how it is enacted—which orientates the book’s arguments and critiques.

English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 322 Pages | ISBN : 9819791898 | 12.6 MB

This book, part of a two-volume exploration, examines the trajectory of India-China relations, spanning from the making of a common border to the events leading to the 1962 war. Relying on vast Chinese, Indian, as well as western sources, the study provides a detailed exegesis of the nature of conflict covering over a century of political contours in the British India, Manchu China, Republican China and finally the Republic of India and Peoples Republic of China. This includes the British as well as Manchu aggression in Tibet and the ensuing diplomatic manoeuvrability between various stakeholders, resulting in conclusion of various conventions and boundaries including the contentious McMahon Line and shifting line alignments of the Chinese in the Western Sector of India-China border. The domestic socio-political and economic climate as well as the equations that resulted from the Cold War between India and China have been looked into and analysed reflecting the Chinese and well as Indian perspectives. The special case of Sino-Pak entente and India-China rivalry in Asia as a whole has been analysed vis-à-vis their security concerns.

Albert Camus as Philosopher and Political Thinker: The Radicality of Modesty

Albert Camus as Philosopher and Political Thinker: The Radicality of Modesty by Tommaso Visone
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 150 Pages | ISBN : 3031745639 | 3.2 MB

This book explores the role of modesty in the thought of Albert Camus.
Camusian modesty – modestie – affirms, against nihilism and absolutism, the necessity of taking care and putting passion into the relativity of human creation and recreation. The book shows how this care and passion spring from the necessity of a continually renewed tension between the self and the limits which transcend the self. From this standpoint, modesty is not a form of moderation; it goes to the root of human condition in face of the absurd. It is a radical attitude which engages human life in a daily struggle for meaning.

Husserl and Leibniz: Metaphysics, Monadology and Phenomenology by Iulian Apostolescu, Mohammad Shafiei
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 270 Pages | ISBN : 3031788796 | 3.4 MB

Little has been published (especially in English) on the connections between these two fields and this edited volume is an invitation to assess the similarities and differences between Husserl’s philosophical projects and Leibniz’s metaphysics. Many Leibniz scholars have contributed to this volume. Phenomenologists covered include Stumpf, Brentano, Heidegger, Reinach, and Gurwitsch. This book appeals to scholars and advanced students working in the field.
