Resilience as indicator for the robustness of societal processes generally has a positive connotation. Today, however, successful social changes seem to be marked more by processes of experimentation under conditions of not knowing. Matthias Groß investigates such processes using the example of ecological fields of practice, in which expectations of certainty are indeed high, but where recognized gaps in knowledge seem insurmountable. He shows that the success in dealing with these tensions, which are so typical in our society, is not grounded in high levels of resilience, but rather is based on experimental cultures which have learnt to deal constructively with lacks of knowledge and unavoidable uncertainties.
