Based on a true story, an elderly women resiliently spends nine months attempting to retrieve her husband's dead body, fighting government bureaucracy and indifference all along the way.

The town constable, Bob Valdez, is forced to kill someone accused by Frank Tanner of being a murderer. Valdez asks Tanner for monetary help for the man's wife, but he is ridiculed and almost killed by Tanner's henchmen. Valdez recovers and summons up his days in the U.S. Cavalry in order to fight them. Valdez wounds one of the henchmen and sends him back to Tanner with the message, "Valdez is coming."

La grande fortuna del romanzo poliziesco (sosteneva Glauser in un articolo a difesa del realismo nella narrativa poliziesca) era dovuta all'essere rimasto, il "giallo", l'unico genere di romanzo a occuparsi ancora della vita vera: "la rappresentazione degli uomini, del loro destino, dell'atmosfera in cui si muovono". Una tesi che spiega una caratteristica del suo narrare che colpisce chi lo legge: qualsiasi storia inventi Glauser, anche il più intricato destino, è sempre come se, più che raccontare, ricordasse qualcosa di vissuto. Un bisogno di essere presente alla trama della fantasia che ha un gusto bizzarro nei foschi e complessi suoi romanzi polizieschi.
