Guido Carani, an engineer of noble descent, has just lost his son born to him by a chorus dancer, who, desperate, has become a nun. After a while he also loses his wife and daughter in a car accident. Poor Guido is in despair, but soon he meets Lina, a woman who is a dead ringer for Luisa.

Her youth has been spent working for a farm family, being raped by father and son, marrying the son who has now left her a happy widow. She is happy because World War I is over and she is enjoying being in control of the farm. And then she hires the handsome stranger who helped her carry the new incubator for chicks from the bus and across the canal. In the house by the canal with the job of raising and lowering the bridge for passing boats lives the widow's envious sister-in-law along with husband and nubile daughter.

A woman, pushed by her son and poverty, agrees to see his brother in law, a wealthy man who has loved her all his life and proposes to her. A strange kind of comedy, mostly deadpan but also full of a kind of melancholia that recalls a car crash. The blandness of the script makes Avati’s feel relatively forgettable, but the film is still worth seeing especially for the performances by Antonio Albanese, Neri Marcoré and a surprising turn by TV personality and opera singer Katia Ricciarelli, as well as some delightful references to a romantic turn of the twentieth century rural Italy.

Based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway. Santiago goes out on his usual fishing trip and makes a huge catch, the biggest of his life. Then a shark attacks and tries to steal his catch. Santiago battles with the shark for days. He returns to the shore beaten, tattered and torn, and his catch consisting now of mostly bones.
