They keep the world's economy rolling. They helped save Europe (and possibly the world) from Nazi domination. They are the most important vessels ever to sail the seas. THE FREIGHTERS is a fascinating look at the vital ships that haul billions of tons of cargo annually.

In a new series Caroline Quentin visits three of Britain's most popular national parks. The actress and presenter is celebrating areas of outstanding natural beauty around Britain, partly by bombarding us with facts (the loch is 600 ft deep, the park covers 700 square miles, and so on), and partly by doing that thing presenters have to do, trying her hand at everything – ceilidh dancing, caber-tossing and in one of the less thrilling sequences, counting bats at dusk. She rings barn owl chicks and takes a rainy swim in the loch and has a terrific time.

For over 1,200 years church bells have called the faithful to worship, helping people celebrate triumph and commemorate tragedy. But the fact that they are one of the largest and loudest musical instruments in the world is often overlooked.

The life and work of Allen Ginsberg, the greatest of the Beat Generation poets is put in focus in this film.

The Heroes of the Somme uses original archive from the Western Front to uncover the stories of seven of the men whose remarkable bravery won them the Victoria Cross, Britain's most prized military medal. The WWI Somme offensive lasted 141 days and involved 13 Allied nations fighting 14 separate battles. Day One of the battle, 1 July 1916, was the worst in British military history with 60,000 casualties. By the end of the offensive the total for both sides was a million. This extraordinary sacrifice was made for just six miles of empty farmland.
