Historian and author William Dalrymple travels to the Deccan Plains of India to trace the romantic love affair between a British diplomat and a young Muslim princess. James Achilles Kirkpatrick was the British East India Company resident at the court of Hyderabad when he risked everything, converting to Islam and, sources suggest, even becoming a double agent, to marry Khair un Nissa 'Most Excellent among Women.' Pursuing this compelling story of seduction and betrayal through the archives across both continents, Dalrymple unearths a world almost entirely unexplored by history. Kirkpatrick's behaviour might appear to breach the conventional boundaries of empire, but it was not unique. At the turn of the 18th century, one in three British men in India, known as white mughals, lived with Indian women, wore local dress and adopted Indian ways, much to the embarrassment of successive colonial administrations. To protect them from growing disapproval their mixed race children were sent back to England for their education and were ultimately absorbed into Victorian society.

Young Bride is a simple story, a wonderful Pre-Code starring two who excelled during the time period. Allie (Helen Twelvetrees) is a recluse who spends all her time in her tiny apartment or at the library where she works. Her dancehall friend Daisy (Polly Walters) occasionally tries to drag her out for a date, but she refuses anything besides having dinner. One night, she's fixed up with a boastful but attractive man named Charlie (Eric Linden) who puts as many pick up lines over on her as he can in hopes of catching her attention.

Sach is hired as the companion for a poodle on an ocean voyage from New York to London. What he doesn't know is that the people who hired him are actually diamond smugglers, and there is a cache of diamonds hidden in the poodle's coat.

Sach and Duke set out to expose a stage hypnotist as a phony. In order to do so, Sach allows himself to be hypnotized and "regressed" to a past life–which he discovers was as a tax collector who gets a map of buried treasure from Blackbeard the Pirate. The hypnotist gets Sach to reveal the location of the map and the treasure, planning to lock up the boys and get the treasure for himself.

In the Bosnian town of Tesanj, not long after the Balkan war, land mines claim victims, corruption is rampant, women are trafficked into Serbia, but there's a sort of peace. Zaim, the retired police chief, has alcoholic visions of his dead son Adnan, whose body's missing. Adnan's siblings, Faruk and Azra, watch their father's decline. It's announced that President Clinton will pay Tesanj a visit to see the new harmony. Whores are hidden from sight, Serbs are trucked in to integrate the neighborhood; the children's choir learns "House of the Rising Sun." Meanwhile, Faruk wants to sort out his brother's death to bring some peace to his house. Can it work out? Irony is everywhere.
