One of the legendary moments in Callas's career came in 1950 in Mexico City, when she interpolated a stupendous top E flat at the end of the Triumphal Scene in Act II of Aida. In this recording under Serafin she abided by the score, but still prompted Gramophone to speak of her 'fascinating art and prodigious personality', observing the way she was 'rapt in imaginative intensity in the significance of the words'.

Maria Callas sang more operas by Verdi on stage than by any other composer. After Violetta in La traviata, Aida was the Verdi role she sang most, and this opera featured strongly in the early part of her career. She sang it first in Turin in 1948 under Serafin and this led to further engagements elsewhere around Italy in places like Rovigo, Brescia and Naples as she began to become established as a dramatic soprano.

It was as a replacement for an ailing Renata Tebaldi that Callas first appeared at La Scala, Milan, in Aida in April 1950 but she made little or no impression. Aida was also one of the operas in which Callas had been highly successful when she went to Buenos Aires and Mexico, and she had caused a sensation in Mexico City when she took and held the top E flat at the end of the Triumphal Scene to teach a lesson to an over-assertive tenor. She eschewed this grand gesture in the present recording, which was the last time she sang the role, but otherwise it preserves her interpretation of one of her major Verdi assumptions.

She is well supported by a strong cast, including the tenor Richard Tucker (Radamès), who had been her partner in La Gioconda when she made her European debut in Verona in 1947, and the distinguished mezzo-soprano Fedora Barbieri (Amneris). But it is the baritone Tito Gobbi (Amonasro) who inspires Callas to the height of her vocal and dramatic powers in their impassioned duet in the Nile Scene. The two singers never performed this opera together on stage, but in the studio they create in sound alone a complete realisation of this great scene, which here becomes the emotional heart of the opera. Her final appearances as Aida in the opera house were at Covent Garden and the Verona Arena in 1953, making 33 performances in all.
