These performances by Heifetz are amazing. Heifetz owned the Sibelius concerto all his life (and was the first to really standardize it as one of the great concertos beside Beethoven's Mendelssohn's Brahms's and Tchaikovsky's). The disc is worth the price simply for the Sibelius, yet you also get two outstanding performances of the Prokofiev and Glazunov as well. The sonics are spectacular; it sounds as if these masterpieces were recorded yesterday. Heifetz was the undisputed master of the bow, and this disc proves it; it is a must for all lovers of music.

Amazon review:
Having read about Heifetz's legendary status in this concerto, I bought it on amazon marketplace - I was not disappointed! It is a different performance from my other favourites (Lin/Salonen, Marcovici/Jarvi on BIS)- the sound is drier, more analytical, the violin upfront with a huge personality & presence (that must be Heifetz)& the orchestral accompaniment is expert too ; the most salient feature of this performance is the (not so) slow 2nd movement, which is dispatched in a little over 6 minutes but in my view is none the worse for that, as it's the movement I don't really enjoy as much as the other 2.The overriding impression of this disc is how much Heifetz relishes the challenge - this is allegedly the most difficult violin concerto to play (the violin counterpart to Rach 3 for pianists!)
I recommend it - the other 2 concertos are fine too if you like them - the Sibelius dwarfs them both for me, especially the Glazunov

Allmusic review:
In reissuing its vintage stereo recordings, RCA either reproduces the original albums as they were released on LP or combines several recordings into much fuller programs. Fortunately, the 2nd option pertains to this album of Jascha Heifetz's masterful performances of violin concertos by Sibelius, Prokofiev & Glazunov; listeners get well over an hour of great music. Heifetz recorded Sibelius' concerto & Prokofiev's Concerto No. 2 in 1959, & these were released on LP with Walter Hendl & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the former, & with Charles Münch & the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the latter; the Glazunov concerto was recorded in 1963, with Hendl leading the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. As varied as the conductors, ensembles, & venues are, there is remarkable consistency in the excellence of the recordings. Heifetz is always in complete control, & his awe-inspiring playing binds these performances. In terms of reproduction, Heifetz is always distinctly separated from the orchestral accompaniment, & the 3 ensembles are reproduced with natural depth. For Heifetz fans who want to hear every astonishing detail, this is an ideal disc.
