Andrea Beneventano is an Italian pianist who mostly known for very important collaborations with Sal Nistico, Steve Grossman, Jon Faddis, Red Rodney, Gary Bartz, Donald Harrison, Rick Margitza, Steve Turre, Massimo Urbani, Paolo Fresu, Flavio Boltro, Eddy Palermo, Franco Cerri, Benny Golson, Buster Williams, Ed Thigpen, Arthur Blythe, Nathan Davis, Chico Freeman … and the list goes on.
Sin dalle prime note dell'iniziale waltz Cool River si sente infatti la stoffa del buon pianista, che ha assorbito a dovere la lezione evansiana e quella dei grandi pianisti di matrice bop, e sa dare alle frasi il giusto respiro, con un bel senso della costruzione, piena padronanza degli sviluppi armonici e un solismo cantabile e comunicativo. L'interplay che caratterizza tutta la registrazione è encomiabile, il walking e i notevoli assolo del contrabbassista e il puntuale accompagnamento del batterista sono appropriati in ogni brano, dagli originali (tutti del pianista, di estrema gradevolezza, in particolare l'ardito blues The Driver) ai due pregevoli standard, When Sunny Gets Blue e If I Should Lose You, arrangiato con uno stile da menzionare.
