That's really a matter of taste - he had never played so hard before and never again after that! Instead of his meager minimalism, which he has refined more and more over the past ten years, here, on his third recording, he relies on screeching, yowling lead guitars (Will Kimbrough - as always) and - it's hard to believe it - comes close to Tom Petty! Although he, Petty, by no means sounds as edgy and aggressive as Snider in 1998. This is mainly due to Kimbrough's guitar, which makes them crack far more than Mike Campbell, even when he plays slides.
You just listen to the two central songs - Out All Night and Guaranteed - right in a row. Including the vocal phrasing, this is something like Damn the Torpedoes, while not qualitatively lagging behind the heartbreakers in anything, not even in the quality of the melodies. If Petty were to sing them, everyone would say, "that's clear! so about Echo (1 year later)" Only with the noise there is an "expansion" of the petty usual.
