Two albums from this obscure soul ensemble – a group with the same sort of upbeat, positive energy we love in The Sylvers! Surprise Surprise is a lost bit of boogie from the late Curtom years – a set that has TTF working with the hard-grooving team of Jimmy Levine and Jesse Boyce! The album's got a sparkling sort of polish that's really great, yet far from commercial sound of the time – way better than most indie sets of this nature, especially in the way it manages to shift around between groovers and ballads, and give space to some of the different vocalists in the process. Instrumentation's nice and warm – that rich modern soul sound that Curtom was showing in its final years – and titles include "Mighty Fine", "If The World Could Love", "Let Yourself Go", "Love Is Just What You Make It", and "Got To Keep Movin On". Ain't No Doubt About It is an album with a bit of a mystery – as it's got the same cover image as the wider-circulated Surprise Surprise set, and also includes a few of the same songs – but in earlier versions too! Lead vocals are by Debra Peevy on many numbers – and she's got a style that's a bit sweet, but never overcome to strongly by the arrangements – which themselves are full and very grooving. There's plenty of catchy numbers here – and if the set had been issued on the Solar label, wethinks it would have been a huge hit at the time – but instead, it got trapped in the crumbling Curtom empire, and never got the exposure it deserved.
