When The Doors' first album hit the transatlantic counterculture of the late '60s, their music seemed like an unprecedented trip into Bacchanalian excess and shamanic intensity, yet little material has arisen of the embryonic period that led to this psychic watershed - enter this recording of one of their earliest gigs in the titular Los Angeles venue, on which, thanks to audience member Nettie Pena's reel-to-reel recording device, we can now witness a seemingly unbothered crowd chat and clink glasses as rock iconography emerges thrillingly before their bleary eyes and ears. From gutsy blues standards to a spooky early take on 'Strange Days'.
