In 1960 Miles Davis arrived to Europe for a tour with his new quintet, including tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The Davis-Coltrane quintet's live recordings captured during the tour have come to be considered treasures. The first reason for this is their rarity. Coltrane left Miles to form his own group soon after this brief early 1960 tour. (Miles toured Europe again at the end of the year - with Sonny Stitt in Trane's place. During this time Coltrane recorded his famous My Favorite Things album, which paved the way for his extended collaboration with pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones and marked his first hit on soprano sax.) Coltrane didn't even want to make that tour, but Miles had insisted and for whatever reason he didn't see fit to refuse. And while Coltrane did indeed make the trip, the truth is that, as the French writer noted, his 1960 playing was very different from that of his studio recordings with Miles. He seems to be playing more for himself than for the quintet. These amazing and never before released performances in Germany, help to extend the legend.
Tracks 1 to 4: probably Deutsches Museum, Kongress-Saal, Munich, Germany, Sunday, April 3, 1960.
Tracks 5 and 6: Kongresshalle, Frankfurt, Germany, Wednesday, March 30, 1960.
This release presents two never before released performances in Germany by the great Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane. Among the highlights are three different extended performances of "So What" (two sets were played at the first concert) and a new reading of the classic "'Round Midnight".
