Lefèvre began his musical career as a jazz pianist in a trio with Hubert Rostaing and Bobby Jaspar. He also played piano in the orchestra of his colleagues and later competitors Franck Pourcel and Paul Mauriat. he released his first album with Barclay in 1956. Only a little later he also recorded several albums with the singer Dalida. With a conservatory degree in piano and flute, Lefèvre became known for numerous film scores for films by Louis de Funès between 1964 and 1982. In addition, he made a name for himself as an orchestra conductor. He himself recorded mostly easy listening, but also instrumental versions of film themes and also modernized classical melodies.

Like his colleague Paul Mauriat, Lefèvre also managed to land hits in the USA. In 1958, he was already at number 30 on the hit parade with the Gilbert Bécaud song The Day the Rains Came. The gap to his second and last single success was unusually long: it was not until 1968 that he reached number 37 on the pop and number four on the easy listening charts with Soul Coaxing, in the original Âme câline by Michel Polnareff. In the latter he was able to place again in 1968 when La, La, La, an adaptation of the Eurovision winner of the same year, climbed to 23rd place. In the UK, Soul Coaxing was also present in the charts with a peak placement at number 46.

in 1999, his recording La marche des gendarmes from the Louis de Funès film of the same name entered the French singles charts.

Lefèvre was the conductor of the orchestra at the Eurovision Song Contest four times.
