Big percussive orgy for this double album by Quin Kirchner. With the Shadows and the Light, the Chicago drummer mixes original compositions and meticulously chosen covers, to better identify those who influenced him as Carla Bley (King Korn), Sun Ra (Sahara) or Frank Foster (at this Point in time that Elvin Jones had slipped on his Prime Element). "My favorite albums have always been the ones that take the listener on a trip. I aim to do this, to create worlds with my records, universes … I am influenced by so many different styles of creative music and I try to bring all these influences into harmony on my records. "An approach that propels Kirchner on the broken works of Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, two universes whose echoes sometimes resonate here. Solo as well as septet with bassist Matt Ulery, saxophonists Nate Lepine, Greg Ward and Nick Mazzarella, keyboard player Rob Clearfield, clarinetist Jason Stein and trombonist Nick Broste, he enjoys slipping syncopated Afro-Cuban rhythms (Batá Chop) as great collective masses at the borders of free (the final of At this Point in time) or quasi-exotic interludes (Rift). Quin Kirchner thinks mostly of his music as a group, and at no time does his abundant the Shadows and the Light, inhabited by trance as spirituality, have the traits of a drummer record.
